Parade Marshal Announced

The Student Council is honored to announce that New Berlin Junior High teacher and longtime member of the NBHS football  and baseball coaching staff Mr. Jeff Harres will serve as this year’s Homecoming Parade Marshal.

Harres has been teaching at NBJH for 34 years.  We asked him to name his favorite part of the job, and he replied: “A lot of great kids [who] were raised by great parents!  So many of my former students are now my friends!“  He continued that some of his favorite memories in the classroom are of “learning and having fun with the Junior High kids.”  He specifically mentioned “playing the ‘Name Game’ with the 7th graders and how serious they took that game!”

Harres has been coaching for the district for 30 years.  He feels very  proud of how the football team “started with absolutely nothing and then built things up to where we became a perennial playoff program for about 25 years!”  He asserts that, “Hundreds of people deserve recognition for that!”  He lists the “undefeated 2004 team that almost went all the way” and the “week 9 game at NB vs hated-rival Auburn” as two of the moments on the field he will cherish.  He elaborated, “Auburn was unbeaten while we needed a win to make the playoffs..  We kicked their butts in the 4th quarter to win 24-12 in front of the loudest Pretzel crowd ever!”

We asked him why New Berlin, and he responded: “Supt. Greg Reynolds and the board hired me when nobody else would and I'm a loyal person.  And pretty much every year I felt that we would have a great team and I didn't want to miss out! (And the teaching situation was really good).”  He continued, “My entire adult life was spent at this school so obviously I consider New Berlin my home and just love everything about the CUSD 16 communities!”

On his future replacement, he advised: “Become a good story-teller,  know your subject(s), get to know your students, and make it fun!!”

They will surely have some big shoes to fill!  We’ll miss you, Mr. Harres!

The parade will take place on Sunday, September 11th at 1:00 P.M. and will run from the Sangamon County Fairgrounds to NBHS.
